How Second Sight make training accessible and user-friendly with LearnUpon

Second Sight Training Systems is an organization that has an important job to do. Responsible for delivering active threat assessment courses to law enforcement, military, and security personnel, it’s critical their team has a user-friendly, out-of-the-box training solution, that also enables them to meet this industry’s high standards. They decided LearnUpon’s LMS best suited their needs.

“I chose LearnUpon because it was built on the idea that I would learn how to use it, rather than paying somebody else to build it for me. It’s allowed us to meet Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) level certification in 35 states in the U.S. We’re super excited as we can now approach our clients with certified training that will help to solve the challenges they’re facing.”

The move from manual

Second Sight Training Systems is an organization that decided it was time to expand their offering by making the move to online learning.

At that time, the team offered a number of courses and delivered them in-person. However, this didn’t always work for their target audience – law enforcement officers out in the field across the U.S., doing their jobs. When a 24/7/365 organization engages in face-to-face training the cost can be significant. There’s the cost of getting officers to attend in-person training, paying other officers to work their shifts while they train, and paying the instructors. It was simply impractical to take them away from their on-the-job duties.

Additionally, processes were manual and restrictive for the Second Sight team. Instead, they wanted to formalize the training they were delivering to gain an industry standard certification.

They decided to invest in an LMS that would help them manage and deliver the training online. Significantly, it had to be simple to set up, while also being easy to use for both admins and learners. It also needed to support video content, as the majority of their courses include visual scenarios.

User-friendly training for admins and learners

Impressed with the functionality and simplicity, LearnUpon proved to be the best solution for Second Sight.

For the team, it was ease of use that instantly stood out. Tasks like course building, where they used a mixture of content – video, text, images, exams, and so on – were made effortless.

“The knowledge-checks, exams, and the different formats have been helpful. I think it's great to have the ability to consume authored content too. I hear of nightmares that other people have with trying to get authored content to work, but with LearnUpon it’s a simple process. That’s really big.”

The team could automate tedious tasks too. No longer did they have to certify every trainee manually. It was now all done automatically through the LMS.

Not only did the LMS suit the team’s needs, but also the needs of the trainees. LearnUpon’s user-friendly interface is perfect for their learners – tech-savvy or not.

Having courses online means that training can be done when the learner has the time to. They can log in, start a course, stop when they have more pressing tasks, and then come back later to complete it. It fits their always-on-the-go work schedule.

“Our law enforcement trainees are completing this training while they're on their down-time at work. They're taking the training 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Everything is saved too. This is really important for law enforcement trainees because if they get an urgent call, they have to drop everything and go. That's a key feature for us.”

Perhaps the biggest achievement has been that LearnUpon empowered Second Sight to gain the IADLEST National Certification, a seal of approval that ensures their training meets the required high-standards in 35 states.

“There are requirements that come down from a state level and this means that there's a recognition that our curriculum meets those requirements. It helps open doors for us in all these states.”

As for what’s next on the agenda, the Second Sight team is looking to expand the training they provide. They recently launched an online Situational Awareness for Safety course for organizations or individuals who want to learn systematic observation so they can keep themselves, their colleagues, friends, and family safe. And, of course, it’s all done through LearnUpon.

“We're building new content for ourselves, but we're also in talks with other companies to develop different kinds of training. I'm hoping soon to be able to engage with these organizations and take advantage of the ability to have customized and branded portals in LearnUpon.”
